My favourite flash games
I used to go on Newgrounds a lot when I was younger (a website for amateur animations and games). Here's some of my favourite flash games from Newgrounds.
The Company of Myself
The Company of Myself is a simple 2D platformer, but with a twist: when you restart a level, ghostlike recordings of your previous attempts accompany you. What's more, you have to use these past versions of yourself to complete the level. For example, in one level you're faced with a chasm that's too wide to jump. At first, all you can do is kill yourself by jumping into the chasm. But every time you retry, you can get a little closer to the other side because you can jump on the heads of your previous tries. You're basically making a bridge from your suicides.
It's a cool experience, watching all your past, failed attempts. Each guy seems to have his own personality. My first attempt is always slow and cautious, while the later attempts are faster and more sure of themselves.
By the way, the storytelling technique, music and gameplay are all inspired by another game: Braid. That's not a bad thing though since Braid is another one of my favourite games.
Don't Shit Your Pants
This is a text-based game where the goal is to take a shit without soiling your pants. It's more difficult than it sounds, especially if you forget to remove your pants first:
I also love this game because of screens like this one:
As long as you don't dirty your pants, the game doesn't care if your shit on the floor instead of the toilet:
Crossroads:2D
This is a short RPG where the goal is to kill a troll and receive a reward from the king. But the best thing about this game is that you can do whatever you want. If you're feeling like a bad guy, you can kill the king instead of the troll. In fact, you can kill any NPC. I wish more RPGs were like that. The game is flawed though: your character walks as slow as the Pope with hemorrhoids and the graphics are a blatant rip-off of Pokemon.
400 years
In this game you play an animate moai and your goal is to stop a mysterious catastrophe 400 years in the future. You press the space bar to speed up time, which is an integral part to solving the puzzles. For example, to cross a lake, you have to plant crops for a starving village and then wait fifty years for the villagers to build a bridge. I like the calming music and the feeling of being an ancient statue.
Deep Sleep
Deep Sleep is a point and click game, and Deeper Sleep is the sequel. Both involve the idea that there are terrifying creatures living in our dreams. Don't play these games at night.
Lucky Tower
This game involves descending a tower where each floor has three doors. One door always leads to safety and the other two always lead to a grisly death. You have no way of knowing which is the right door, so you have to use trial and error. The animation, voice acting and humour are some of the best I've seen on Newgrounds.
One Chance
I'm getting tired of describing games so I'll just post the creator's blurb: "In the last 6 remaining in-game days on Earth, the player must make choices about how to spend his last moments. Will he spend time with his family, work on a cure or go nuts?" I tried my best to work on a cure, but instead I got side-tracked and spend my final days having sex in the car with a colleague.
The game is called 'One Chance' because you're meant to only have one chance to play it. This is because the game uses a cookie to store your ending, so when you reload the page, you're always faced with your end screen. My end screen was my character sitting on a bench, dead. How depressing. I should have spent more time working on a cure instead of banging my colleagues.
Fly Guy
This isn't so much of a game as an experience. You play as a man waiting for the bus. You can walk left and right, but there isn't much to see. Then the magic happens: you realise you fly with the up arrow key. From there you fly up into the sky and meet strange characters. The minimalist graphics and soothing music create a dream-like ambience matched only by sublime humour.
