Where are the towns and dungeons in Lego Worlds?
I really really want to find towns, cities and dungeons in Lego Worlds. I don't know why. I know it would make me orgasm all over my laptop screen though.
At the time of writing this post, Lego Worlds is only in the beta version, and there are no towns or dungeons yet. I've done some research and apparently the developers are working on them at the moment. The following is a list of information I could find, in chronological order:
News in 2015
In 2015, the game's steam page had this information:
How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version? We plan to add Generated Towns/Villages/Settlements relevant to the Biome.
On 31 July 2015, the developers mentioned towns on their Steam blog:
Also tying in to making exploration and discovery better, we are working on a procedural system for generating towns & settlements. We may be able to share some screenshots soon, but we’ll talk more about this feature when the towns come alive with characters, creatures and vehicles.
News in 2016
On 17 March 2016, the developers wrote:
One element we have always promised to deliver on is the natural spawning of Towns and interesting Dungeons. We’ve got a really interesting system being worked on by a gentleman named Derek here and it’s also going really well.
On 14 November 2016, Derek (I'm going to call him 'Dungeon' Derek from now on) wrote a post about towns and dungeons. The post basically describes the algorithm for generating towns.
A lot of the work so far has been focused on creating cities upon a flat landscape, but the next challenge is to generate a city on top of more natural terrain. Preliminary work has been done to generate a road network that follows the terrain generated by LEGO Worlds (although a little bit of terraforming will be required to complete the effect). When the generation pipeline is more stable, adding pavement and street props can begin. Then once work has finished on the structure of the city, we can begin bringing life to the city, adding a population and a working traffic system. The final goal will be to start linking cities together via motorways. Then we can start to think about doing interesting things underground as well… So still a fair bit to go before you’re likely to see this stuff crop up in your worlds, but hopefully this has whetted your appetite a little.
Sadly, there's nothing in the post about dungeons. There's some cool screenshots of towns though:
On 28 December 2016, the social media team posted this screenshot to Twitter:
The caption was, "Do you have what it takes to risk your studs in exploration of our dungeons? Test your strength." This means the photo is of a pre-generated dungeon! It also implies that dungeons will be a part of the final version of the game, released in March.
