PaulJonesBlog.com?
For the past year or so, I've been a self-employed translator, copywriter, proofreader, and most controversially, a ghost essay writer. To find clients I simply advertised on Kijiji.ca, a free Canadian classifieds website. But now I'm not in Canada anymore, and I haven't advertised my services for over two months, and so work is slowing down to a trickle.
A good way to find new clients would be a website dedicated to my professional life. Trouble is, I can't think of a good url. Here's some ideas:
- pjonesservices.com I don't like the word 'services' though, because it sounds like I'm a gigalo.
- pauljoneswork.com But the word 'work' doesn't quite sound right.
- pauljonesjobs.com Jobs? Sounds like I'm offering jobs, like the jobcenter.
- translationandessays.com But I don't want to limit myself to just translations and essays.
- employpauljones.com Kind of cheesy.
- hirepauljones.com Also cheesy. I like its brevity though.
- pauljonessolutions.com Makes me sound like an IT analyst. Plus the url is too long.
- kajadge.com How the fuck did I come up with that? And what's a 'kajadge'? It sounds like slang for a vagina.
All these urls are available to buy, by the way, and for a good reason: they're crap.
It's okay though, because I have a backup plan: I'm gonna use www.paulchrisjones.com. But wait - isn't that the very site you're at right now!? Don't worry, gentle reader, I don't plan to demolish this blog - I'd just change its URL to something else. In fact, I've already bought www.pauljonesblog.com for this purpose. I quite like this URL, because it's self-explanatory.
But I'm hesitant to change this blog's URL because it's like ripping a tree from its roots. All of Google's links to it would be broken, and then I'd have to start building traffic again from scratch. I get between 50-100 views per day, which not only feeds my ego but also gives me money via a banner ad. Don't start thinking I'm Bill Gates though, because I've only earned only £2 so far.
This site in Nov 2013.
By the way, historical precedent supports a url change, because this blog hasn't been paulchrisjones.com for very long: around two years ago, it was www.paulchrisjones.blogspot.com, and before that, it was www.letsbeclear.blogspot.com (I use Wordpress now, by the way, not Blogspot). Therefore, another name change wouldn't be unusual.
But look what happened to my site traffic when I changed its URL from www.letsbeclear.blogspot.com to www.paulchrisjones.blogspot.com:
It dropped from almost 10,000 views per month to zero! It's like looking at the world's scariest roller coaster.
I bet you're wondering how I got almost 10,000 views a month in the first place? Well, it was because a handful of my pictures were ranked highly in Google images. So, for example, if you searched for royal family tree in Google images, my%20amateurish%20picture was%20one%20of%20the%20first%20results.%20Actually,%20my%20most%20popular%20image%20was%20of%20the quadratic formula, which achieved 7,725 views alone. This is in the days I'd write about any old shit I had a passing interest in.
TL;DR Unless I come up with a better idea, this blog will probably become pauljonesblog.com.
