How to avoid Ryanair's payment fee
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
EU law says that airlines have to be upfront about the cost of their flights. The price you see on Skyscanner or Google Flights has to be the price you pay at the checkout.
But apparently Ryanair is the exception. I bought a flight from Ryanair today, and right at the end of the checkout process, the website added a payment fee of €0.66 to my fare. 66 cents isn't a lot, but it's the principle that matters, goddammit. The principle. *Shakes fist furiously*
But after careful experimentation, I learned that Ryanair waives the fee if you pay with one of the following methods: MasterCard Debit, Visa Connect, Visa Electron or Visa Debit/Delta.
Conversely, American Express, MasterCard, MasterCard Prepaid, Visa and PayPal all incur a payment fee.
So basically:
Fee | No fee |
---|---|

As luck would have it, I have a MasterCard Debit card (try saying that ten times), so I can avoid Ryanair's charge. Specifically, the card is from N26, an online-only German bank.
Finally, if you want to express your anger at Ryanair but don't know how, then may I recommend buying a model of a Ryanair plane from Amazon:
And then snapping it in half like this:

I'm being charged $29 to transfer $1000 to a friend. I NEVER had a fee before. The fee is waived if I use a bank account and not a debit card -- according to the app. The app defaults to debit card no matter what. I even deleted the credit card info to "force" the app to choose my bank. It tells me to add a credit/debit card...lolwtfbbq
