Simplifying the world's land masses
A while ago I discovered that Great Britain... hang on, let's be clear about what Great Britain is.
- Great Britain: England, Wales, Scotland
- The UK: all of the above, and Northern Ireland (and presumably some small nearby islands as well)
- British Isles: all of the above and the Republic of Ireland
So a while ago I discovered that Great Britain can effectively be simplified to a triangle:
Ok, so Great Britain is far from a perfect triangle. But at least it's a start in trying to understand its actual shape. It's in fact a model, a simplified representation of the complex real world, and I like models. They're easy to remember.
I'm now wondering what the world map would look like, if the land masses were simplified to triangles. Probably something like this. (Why triangles? Because they're so simple - only 3 sides).
Voila. Does it still look familiar? Australasia is a square, because I found it harder to fit a triangle on it.
Now let's simplify it again, just for the hell of it.
I don't know why, but doing this makes me feel happy. From here, we can see that the world is effectively 2 supercontinents, the Americas and Afro-Eurasia. Who would win in a theoretical fight? It'd come down to nuclear bombs somehow. And we should flee to Greenland or Australasia, or better yet, either of the polar continents (which are so boring I forgot to include them).

Hi Paul, I love this! I was showing this to my wife, and we decide paint this in our dinner room! When I finish, I could send to you a photo if you want!

I just had exactly the same thought! I managed to track down this post via Google images. I really like the 1st image with separate triangles for Europe and Asia, the last one looks like a demonic angel!

Hi. I don't normally do this but I have to give credit where credit is due. I've been desperately trying to 'represent' the world on a dashboard without using a boring map. I searched on Google for Minimal World Map and after lots of trawling, I found yours.
Did you ever think that 6 standard shapes could be inspirational!! Thank you so much.
David.
