Registering 0-year-old at the town hall

5th May 2022 Paul Chris Jones

Dear Diary. Just when you think that there's nothing left to write about, more things happen.

Today we have to register 0-year-old at the town hall for his empadronamiento which was a Spanish bureaucracy thing. Everyone has to do it, including babies. Today is the day before, two days before Girona’s flower festival. And the town hall happens to be at the epicentre of the city as well as the flower festival, so preparations are underway for the festival. We're trying to manoeuvre the pram down narrow cobbled streets. There's a guided tour where all the tourists have headphones while they're listening to the tour guide. We have to push through them. Then as a group of school kids coming up the paths that we have to go into the road behind us, there's a caravan coming down this narrow street. The right-hand-side mirror of the caravan almost hit me as it goes past. 0-year-old’s lying in the cot awake, the pram. Workers are putting flowers into the flowerpots, there's a street called La Rambla where cars are not allowed, but today it's lined with delivery vans bringing food to the restaurants ready for the arrival of the tourists this weekend. Other people are setting up extravagant flower displays. There's going to be a statue of a life-sized giraffe covered in flowers. Today's the busiest day in Girona in terms of work to be done, next week will be the busiest in terms of the number of tourists. Today there's no time for games, there's no time for fun, there's no time for play. There's work to be done.

Anyway, we get 0-year-old's birth registered without any problems. That was at half 10, now it's 11:42 am. Gone to the local outdoor market, there's so much pollen in the air that it reminds me of the forest of the fairy children from Zelda Ocarina of Time. There’s this one big tree and the wind is blowing all the blossom from it. Some of it goes in my eye. It’s a good job, I don't have hay fever or I would be sneezing like Mr Sneeze in a dust factory. It's a nice day today, the weather's warm, the sun is shining, and the sky is blue.
